The Mayor's Transportation Task Force recently proposed raising money for Muni. The new funds, however, would be banned from increasing Muni service. We believe that money collected from the new vehicle license fee must be available to increase Muni service, such as having buses come more often and other service improvements.

Increasing transit service is the crux of an excellent transit system:

  • Allows buses to come more frequently
  • Reduces waiting time
  • Relieves overcrowding
  • Improves the ability to make transfers
  • Addresses schedule deficiencies
  • All of which increase reliability and quicken travel times

If the new funds are only spent on new and shiny vehicles, as recommended by the Mayor's staff, we will have insufficient money to run improved service, and we need to do both.

In addition to permitting the new funds to be used to increase Muni service, equity must be included as part of the definition of good transit.

Transit riders in this City are tired of waiting for the unreliable bus. New Muni funds should be allowed to be used to increase Muni service.

It truly amazes me that muni service is so limited in this “progressive” city. And the Next Big Transportation issue to tackle: BART trains that run at least once after the concert halls, restaurants and bars close (just one more train, say, at 2:15am. Think of Public Safety). I feel like I’m on a permanent curfew if I’m interested in visiting the East Bay by riding public transportation.

Mr. Lee, you have an amazing opportunity to make a real, positive, long-term impact on a San Francisco of rapidly increasing population density. Your legacy should not only be one of kicking destitute people out of parks who have nowhere else to go, giving unneccesary tax breaks to corporations during a thriving tech boom, and only supporting luxury housing for speculative investors. Muni is a worthy cause and an employer of dedicated, skilled people (ever ridden the 33 or 37?) who deserve good salaries and benefits.

MUNI has a long way to go to be a good transit system. Increasing frequency of service is an excellent way to kick this off.

I don’t love muni by any means but it is a great service and by improving reliability/route designs so that there’s less competition with pedestrians sucked into their smart phones and hipsters on fixies and longboards… not even mentioning the enormous amounts of private vehicle traffic which takes up unnecessary space at peak hours

Riders of the M line during rush hour are pitifully underserved. When I see people fighting to get on every day, I hope that Muni management is enjoying the show. Muni is responsible for so much negative energy in the city they should be held accountable by the people.
