I Support Van Ness BRT!

Van Ness BRT will be San Francisco’s first true Bus Rapid Transit project, where buses run almost as efficiently as subways in dedicated center bus lanes. Spanning 2 miles of Van Ness Ave, the project also encompasses replacing the sewer system (built after the 1906 Earthquake) and the overhead wires and poles (most poles are 100 years old), as well as streetscape improvements. When finished, transit times on Van Ness will decrease by up to 32% and Muni buses on Van Ness will never be stuck in traffic again.

However, the project is now in peril. Though the project will add over 90 new trees to the area, doubling its current number, opposition has recently surfaced to the removal of certain trees necessary for its completion. Opponents are advocating for a side lane alternative, one that would make buses run essentially in the same conditions as today. It shows no significant improvement in travel time and reliability as trucks and cars will continue to impede buses by making right turns, pulling into the lane to park, double-parking in the bus lane, or making deliveries. This is unacceptable.

We understand and value the importance of trees in the city. This is why we are excited that soon there will be more of them on Van Ness! Taking cars off the road by building an alternative that is more attractive than driving, as well as doubling the amount of replacement trees that will be planted, will be crucial in mitigating carbon pollution rampant in the urban environment and this busy corridor. Many of the trees are also in very poor condition, and allowing the trees to remain would not only be a liability for the city, but can adversely disrupt someone's business, residence, commute, or life. These trees must be removed, and these bus lanes must be built. Please sign this petition to support robust Bus Rapid Transit on Van Ness.

Sunday Parking Helps Transit, Businesses, & Motorists

We oppose your proposal to end charging at parking meters on Sundays. Transit riders shouldn't have to sacrifice - both in degraded service and in the wallet - so that motorists can get free parking.

Ending Sunday metering will hurt transit riders:

  1. More motorists will be circling for parking and double parking, making Muni slower and less reliable
  2. It will deprive Muni of critical funding, which could result in:
    • Less Muni service
    • More waiting and crowding
    • Higher fares

In addition, Sunday metering has been beneficial to both local businesses and motorists. An SFMTA study published in December 2013 indicated that after Sunday metering, drivers were able to find a parking spot twice as fast as before. In addition, parking turnover increase by at least 20 percent, helping more customers get to local businesses.

Mayor Lee: Support transit riders, local businesses, and motorists - continue the successful Sunday parking meters.

Increase Muni service and improve reliability

The Mayor's Transportation Task Force recently proposed raising money for Muni. The new funds, however, would be banned from increasing Muni service. We believe that money collected from the new vehicle license fee must be available to increase Muni service, such as having buses come more often and other service improvements.

Increasing transit service is the crux of an excellent transit system:

  • Allows buses to come more frequently
  • Reduces waiting time
  • Relieves overcrowding
  • Improves the ability to make transfers
  • Addresses schedule deficiencies
  • All of which increase reliability and quicken travel times

If the new funds are only spent on new and shiny vehicles, as recommended by the Mayor's staff, we will have insufficient money to run improved service, and we need to do both.

In addition to permitting the new funds to be used to increase Muni service, equity must be included as part of the definition of good transit.

Transit riders in this City are tired of waiting for the unreliable bus. New Muni funds should be allowed to be used to increase Muni service.

Petition in Support of Van Ness Bus Rapid Transit

As transit riders, we support the implementation of high-quality Bus Rapid Transit in San Francisco. We want to be sure that the BRT projects in the City - first on Van Ness - are excellent rapid transit projects. We are concerned, however, that there will be efforts to weaken the excellent BRT model. Therefore, we support, and ask that SFMTA pursue, a Van Ness BRT system that promises:

  1. Bus-only lanes in the center of the street for the length of the route, to assure speedy travel time without interruption from private vehicles.
  2. Limited stops, to ensure quick trips along the length of the corridor.
  3. Few left-hand turns, which will slow the bus.
  4. Traffic-light timing to optimize speed and give priority to the BRT buses as they approach an intersection.
  5. Off-board ticketing, to ensure short dwell times at stops.
  6. High quality shelters and buses that entice riders and clearly "brand" this route as BRT - tying it successful BRT projects around the world.
  7. All-door, level boarding.

We urge you to be vigilant as the project moves forward - to assure that San Francisco receives the best BRT on Van Ness Avenue.
